From an early age, Will Vaus was fascinated with the writing and thought of C. S. Lewis. So much so, that when he became an adult, he turned this passion into his vocation. Will moved his family to Ireland for a time to live in community with Lewis’ step-son, Doug Gresham, during the making of the movie, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. It was the Greenhouse Community’s privilege to welcome Will Vaus, actor, pastor and author of Mere Theology: A Guide to the Thought of C.S. Lewis published by Intervarsity Press, via our Greenhouse Arts Teleconference. Will spoke to us on ‘C.S. Lewis and the Arts’. In this excerpt we hear C.S. Lewis’ thoughts on writing. From that vantage point, Will exhorts artists of all media to produce art that is True, while being latent with our deep seated belief in and love for Jesus. You can find the works of C.S. As artists who are also lovers of Jesus, what is our calling? Do we do art for art’s sake or should we look deeper? Published secular author, Cathryn Clinton Hoellwarth, spoke to this during a Greenhouse Arts Teleconference. Cathryn writes books on topics that bend towards the controversial. Her book A Stone in My Hand made it on the 2003 list of banned books right alongside To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. So, where does Cathryn find her foundation as a Jesus-following artist who writes on tough subject matter in a secular world? We find out in this excerpt from her talk, “A Call Towards Wholeness: Hearing God in the World of Creativity and in Everyday Life“.

Kevyn Bashore, a gifted artist and filmmaker, speaks on Sin and Grace in the Arts.  Using the 1978 film version of Les Miserables, Kevyn highlights that artists should look for opportunities in their art form to show clear pictures of redemption that move people towards God.

Mark and Christi discuss the need for breakthrough in their own lives and in the life of the artist. The community will be reading Steven Pressfield’s book The War of Art together as a foundation for discussion this semester. The main point of this book is breaking through the resistance that dogs us and actually produce what is in your heart and part of your destiny. The question posed at this gathering was: how can we fight for each other?
